A DNS zone file is a text file in BIND format containing all DNS records for a domain. It starts with a SOA record and includes all A, AAAA, MX, CNAME, TXT, and other records. Zone files are the standard format for importing/exporting DNS between providers, backing up DNS configurations, and configuring self-hosted DNS servers like BIND, PowerDNS, and NSD.
