What are Name Servers?

Name servers (NS records) are the authoritative DNS servers responsible for a domain. They hold the zone file containing all DNS records for the domain. When anyone looks up a record for your domain, they ultimately query your authoritative name servers.

Common name server providers include Cloudflare (ns1.cloudflare.com), AWS Route 53 (ns-*.awsdns-*.com), Google Cloud DNS, and GoDaddy. Your name servers determine where you manage your DNS records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter the domain in the NS lookup tool above. The results show all authoritative name servers for that domain. These are the servers that hold the DNS zone file and respond to DNS queries for the domain.
Name servers are changed through your domain registrar (the company where you bought the domain), not through your DNS host. Log in to your registrar's dashboard, find the domain's name server settings, and enter the new name server addresses provided by your new DNS host.
Nameserver changes can take 24–48 hours to fully propagate globally because the change updates the TLD registry (e.g., .com, .org) and each DNS resolver worldwide needs to update its cache after the old TTL expires.
